One major non-verbal communication that is often missed by people, is word matching. It is most important to pay attention to both people’s words and their physical characteristics when they are communicating.
 
The idea is to see if the words match the body language. A simple case being someone telling you they are feeling happy while looking at the ground or using a specified tone not matching that of a happy person.
